Advanced Data Processing Syllabus
Course Description
Advanced Data Processing is a class designed to enhance your technology and computer skills. During this semester, we will be focusing on various concepts including basic photo editing, editing audio files, and creating basic movies using various file types (pictures, audio files, videos files, etc.) and then webpage development if time permits.
Programs we will be using include but are not limited to:
- Picture editing via Photoshop and possibly Pixlr.com
- Editing audio files via Audacity
- Creating basic videos via WeVideo
- Designing/Creating web pages and websites using various online resources
Several times we will be doing projects where multiple programs and/or technology are integrated together.
EXPECTATIONS
I have high expectations for this class!
- Students are expected to arrive to class on time, prepared, and ready to work.
- Respect yourself, your teacher, your peers, and all equipment; this includes respecting all opinions and points of view.
- Listen when your peers and I are talking, which means only working on the computer when instructed to do so. You will get as much out of this class as you put into it, so contribute towards the class and all discussions!
- Complaining is over-rated; instead of complaining, provide suggestions and then work towards making the situation better.
- Food and drink, other than water in a sealed container, is NOT allowed in the lab. If you come to class with food/drink, please set it on the table up front.
- NO CELL PHONES in class! All cell phones seen/used during class will be taken and kept until the end of the school day. Any additional offenses will result in a confiscated phone and a detention.
Materials Needed for Class
- Writing utensils
- Flash drive (recommended, since some files you may use are large and your S Drive is only so big, but not required
- Notebook/binder with pockets for notes & handouts
- Any assignments due that class period
- A folder on your S Drive designated to this class only where all of your assignments/projects will be saved
Grading Scale Grade Break-down
A 100-94 Class work: 25%
B 93-85 Projects: 35%
C 84-75 Quizzes / Tests 40%
D 74-65
F 64 & below
Extra Credit is only given in the form of unused bathroom/hall passes at the end of the quarter!
Make-up Work
Attendance to all classes is very important. Even though you receive the handouts or material we covered the day you were gone, you will have missed out on the discussions the class had that day. It is YOUR responsibility to come see me about the work you missed and to make up that work before the next class period; I will not come hunt you down! All missed handouts and work will be placed in the corresponding folder on the “Make-up Work” board. As the handbook states, you have two calendar days for every day you are absent to make up the work.
Late Work
Late work will not be accepted! For any written assignment, it needs to be handed into the basket when the tardy bell rings, not one or five minutes after it rings. As long as you are using your time wisely, you should always have ample time to finish assignments. All computer assignments submitted to Edmodo should be uploaded before your class starts on the due date.
Cell Phones
Cell phones should be placed in the holder at the front of the room at the start of class. Each day you place your cell phone within the holder you will earn an extra credit point towards your Tests category. If you do not have a cell phone, you must place something of value within the holder and you must come speak with me within the next two days to discuss this. If you choose not to put your phone up and are caught in class on your cell phone, your phone will be sent to the office until the reminder of the day and you will lose any points accumulated thus far for that quarter. If you need your phone from which to retrieve files for a project, you may take it but then must put it back up once the files are retrieved.
The only other extra credit given in the form of unused bathroom/hall passes at the end of the quarter which applies to the homework category.
Quizzes / Tests
There will be a few pop quizzes throughout the school year. The Advanced Data Processing tests will always have two parts. One part will be solely on the computer where you will be showing me how to do the skills learned in that section. The second part will be a written test. For the written test, you will need to be able to identify icons, to recognize and define terminology used in the section learned, and to explain how to perform the various skills learned. A study guide will always be provided for each test.
Website
Off of my webpage, there is a page dedicated to this class. Informational handouts for all major assignments and projects will be posted on the website, along with the rubrics the assignments or projects will be graded with. Study guides for tests will also be located on the website.
Other . . .
Book bags are not allowed in class and must remain in your lockers. If a purse is brought to class, it needs to remain on the floor as there is not much room on the tables between computers. Those who are consistently in their purses will have them placed in a designated location. You may listen to music while working on assignments/projects but SHOULD NOT spend all of your time finding the perfect song to listen to. If you are continually seen messing around for songs on music sites, those sites will be blocked from your computer and you will lose your privilege to listen to music while you work
